Pigmentation

WHAT IS PIGMENTATION?

Pigmentation refers to the colour of your skin, determined by melanin produced by skin cells called melanocytes.

When melanin production becomes irregular, it can lead to areas of darker or lighter skin – commonly known as pigmentation concerns.

The most common type we treat at our Hertford clinic is hyperpigmentation – patches of skin that appear darker than the surrounding area. This can take several forms, including sun spots (age spots) – caused by UV damage over time, melasma – hormone-related pigmentation, often appearing on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – dark marks left behind after acne, injury, or irritation.

WHAT CAUSES PIGMENTATION?

Hyperpigmentation develops for various reasons, including:

  • Sun exposure and UV damage
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., during pregnancy or from contraceptive use)
  • Inflammation or skin trauma
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Certain medications or medical conditions

Pigmentation can affect all skin tones and types but is particularly common in those with medium to darker skin.

Beauchamp Aesthetics - Understanding Pigmentation

Pigmentation

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF PIGMENTATION

While pigmentation doesn’t usually pose a health risk, it can make skin appear uneven, aged, or dull.

For many, visible dark patches or marks affect confidence and self-image, especially when difficult to cover with makeup.

At Beauchamp Aesthetics, we take a science-led approach to improving skin tone, targeting pigmentation at both the surface and deeper layers for lasting results.
